Thanks for replying, but I managed to fix the problem on my own :)

The problem was the plrt to which I had been trying to install the printer. https://ameblo.jp/cowpaphatea1971/entry-12633034385.html. I am out and do not have the laptop with me now to be more precise, but what I did was change the port to something like a 'USB virtual device' port or the like. And it worked swiftly. I think this experience might be useful for other users, and since none of the forums or help files I have seen so far had any guidance about which port is the right choice, I am sharing it here.

For the record, it is a Samsung laptop with an AMD processor. If it matters, I can be more precise as soon as I get back home. The installation was done by searching for the driver in Windows Update. Nothing tricky. By the way, the HP website leaves you cold, saying that there is no driver available for the 840c that will work under Win 10. What a bummer.

    Cheers from Rio.

    Hello Mellonius,

We regret the issue. Let me assist you.

Before we proceed any further, let us know a few more details on the below questions.

    • What are the specific error messages when you say 'constant error messages from the printer'?
    • What is the make and model of the PC you are using?
    • Did you install the latest drivers for the printer directly from the manufacturer's website?
    • Did you verify if the make and model of the printer is compatible to work with Windows 10?

As an initial recommendation, I suggest you to perform the troubleshooting steps outlined in the below Microsoft Help link.

Next, check if the printer spooler service is started and working.

    To do so:

    Hp Deskjet 840c Software

    1. Press ‘Win key +R’ on the keyboard.
    2. Type Services in the search box.
    3. Select view local services which appears at the left side of the screen.
    4. Search for Print spooler service and double click on it.
    5. Check if that service is started and the StartUp type is set to Automatic.
    6. To set the service to automatic, right click on the service and click automatic.
    7. Click Apply and then click ok.
