Windows Could Not Complete The Installation Hp Vista

My son has a Gateway laptop. It just shut down and went to a blank screen with a blinking cursor at the top.
I tried to do a system recovery which seemed to be working, but then a box popped up that said 'could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware.
I clicked ok. restarted the computer. Now I'm getting a box that says windows could not complete installation. To install windows, restart the installation.
Nothing is working. I tried starting in safe mode, same response.
The computer didn't come with any disks for windows or system recovery.
Can someone please help me!!
